In 2017 I came across six beautiful green sketchbooks on sale and made myself a deal: if I bought them, I would fill every page. So I gave myself the challenge of creating something new every day — and I did, for years, until all six were full. The video here is from that very first sketchbook. I loved doing these studio sketchbooks so much that I ordered more online in effort to keep making as much art as I can.

More recently my daily sketchbook practice has slowed down, but I still try to give myself an hour most days to make something just for me. A studio sketchbook offers a space to play and explore in a way that is free and deeply personal — and perhaps more importantly, it offers a space for self-acceptance. Whatever lands on the page is okay. I try to approach it the way a scientist approaches the lab: not looking for a masterpiece, just trying to see what works and what doesn't.
